Spelling Bee
Do you have memories of a classroom spelling bee?
Did you stand next to your desk as the teacher gave each student a word to spell?
Spelling Bee season is here! Mission Parish School provides the opportunity for our students to participate in this Spelling Bee competition to help them improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.
All students in grades 3-8 will participate in this fun event. A list of twenty words will be sent home in the Parent Newsletter each week. The challenge word list is for students in grades 6-8. The basic word list is for students in grades 3-5. The word lists are compiled from the 2009 Merriam-Webster “Spell It!” book, the official word list published by the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Each class will hold a classroom Spelling Bee at the end of 12 weeks. The top five spellers from each class will move on to represent their class at the Mission Parish School Spelling Bee.
From grades 3-5, the top spellers will receive the following prizes:
- 1st place = $50
- 2nd place = $25
- 3rd place = $15
From grades 6-8, the top spellers will receive the following prizes:
- 1st place = $100
- 2nd place = $50
- 3rd place = $25
The top two spellers from Grades 3-5 and the top two spellers from Grades 6-8 will represent Mission Parish School at the South Orange County Regional Spelling Bee.
Please note: It is not imperative that every student study for the Spelling Bee. Those students who are interested in placing in the Bee and moving on to the next level will want to spend some time studying the word list that is sent home each week. Other students do not need to feel that this is a necessity. However, all students will be participating in the classroom Spelling Bee. We want this to be a fun, minimal pressure, low stress event. Please do not pressure your child to study if they will feel overwhelmed or if they are already involved in many other activities.
