Fourth grade is a year of discovery as we continue to become independent learners.
Our Religion curriculum is highlighted by the study of the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. Students learn about the Bible and how to locate scripture verses. As faith-filled Catholics, students prepare for and participate in school liturgies and a class retreat.
Social Studies focuses on California geography and history starting with early Spanish explorers and progressing through rancho days, the founding of the Missions, and finishing up with the Gold Rush era and the building of the transcontinental railroad. The year's study culminates with an overnight trip aboard the Brig Pilgrim in Dana Point Harbor - a simulation of what it was like to be a sailor during California's hide-and-tallow trade.
The Science curriculum topics include ecosystems; how animals and plants interact with their environment; volcanoes; and electricity and magnets. Students conduct hands-on experiments in the science lab twice a month.
Students continue to demonstrate proficiency in math skills and learn to add and subtract five-digit numbers, multiply double-digit problems, and do long division. They are introduced to solving simple addition equations and problem-solving with fractions, decimals, and geometric figures.
Over the course of the year, fourth graders read some great literature as a class by authors such as Scott O'Dell and C.S. Lewis. Literature circles allow students to choose their own books to read and discuss. Students practice writing skills through journals, poetry, reports, letters, and stories.
